Chapter 06.5 Juliette

Juliette

Juliette
If you knew what I think;
if you knew how I feel about you,
would you give me some time
to say what’s on my mind
and to let you know all that is true?

Juliette
How I waited for you
but you didn’t have thoughts about me.
Find a place in your heart
Even if we’re apart
For the love pure and simple to be.

Juliette

Juliette
You are part of a dream
that I love to indulge myself in.
It's a wonderful dream
and we’re here you and me.
Now’s the time that it finally begins.

Juliette
Juliette

Juliette
Just a glance from your way
and the heavens rain down with a smile
When it all will come true;
Surely I'll be with you;
Never doubt I’ll be there all the while.

Jacqueline

Oh Jacqueline
If you knew what I think;
if you knew how I feel about you,
would you give me some time
to say what’s on my mind
and to let you know all  that is true?

Oh Jacqueline
How I long after you
but you have no such thoughts about me.
Find a place in your heart
for a man who could start,
for a man who would live faithfully.

Oh Jacqueline
Oh Jacqueline

Oh Jacqueline
You are part of a dream
that I love to indulge myself in.
It's a wonderful dream
and it's just you and me.
If it’s real my life finally begins.

Oh Jacqueline
Oh Jacqueline

Oh Jacqueline
Just a glance from your way
and I lose all my sense of control.
Maybe all will come true;
maybe I'll be with you;
maybe we’ll find a way after all.

Oh Kathleen/Oh Jacqueline/Juliette

There was a gorgeous girl by the name of Kathleen McGee attending Calvin College at the same time I was.  I never met her.  I never said "hi" to her.  I never danced with her at a party with music.  I didn't attend any classes with her or study with her.  But to this day, I can picture her in my mind because at the time her beauty was mesmerizing.  Many, many days I sat in the Cave daydreaming about the two of us falling in love and living happily ever after (sort of a weakness I had, as the reader might have surmised by now).  Instead of pursuing the girls of my dreams, however, I would pine away thinking about them and writing about them and just generally being infatuated with them but never doing anything about it.  So too it was with Kathleen.  Sigh.

Though Bobby and I never took this song very seriously, the memories of those college days come back if I read these lyrics.  I can remember that feeling of wanting to fall in love and the loneliness of the campus.

The lyrics were written during the era described but the whole song wasn't developed until the fall of 1983, like many of our earlier works.

The original lyrics were exactly the same as those above for “Oh Jacqueline” except for substituting “Oh Jacqueline” with a French pronunciation (2 syllables) for “Oh Kathleen”.  I was going to try to turn it into a song for my dear wife but it just didn’t sound right to me so I rewrote it again as letter from future me (perhaps already dead and looking down from heaven or following her form the spirit world) to a future granddaughter.  I used Juliette for her name because we almost named our second daughter Veronique Juliette instead of Veronica Jade.  Since she and her sister both know this I thought there might be a slight chance that one of them would name one of their daughters Juliette.

There was never any recordings of the old song from the 80’s so during the COVID epidemic I took some time to record it, hopefully improving it along the way from it’s very simple 3 chord base to a song with guitar solos and such.
